TV Review: Will & Grace

Will & Grace like all long running TV series have good episodes and bad episodes. my memory.

People don’t watch Will & Grace for the plot. People tune in because its funny as hell. In fact Will & Grace aren’t actually that funny but luckily this show has Jack & Karen which is one of the funniest friendships TV has ever seen.

This show was one of a kind with the main male lead being a gay man but this show wasn’t about the normal angst and drama you usually find with gay representation on TV. This was more of a we are here, we are queer get use to it attitude. In fact this show is great if you wanna know what went down in the 90s, they even have a whole episode around Grace wearing a water bra (so 90s!).

So basically it wasn’t about homosexuality like you would think. Instead, the show focused on friendship.

What makes Will & Grace important to the LGBT community is the legacy they left behind.

While Jack was the flamboyant stereotypical gay, Will was a regular guy who just happens to be gay. He could easily be your friend, your neighbor, your lawyer. This was rarely seen before that’s right gay people are normal people too shocking!

Alot of people will argue what actually did Will & Grace achieve, but think back to 1998 and how may gay characters were gay and compare it to how many gay characters were around by 2006 by the end of the show. Let’s just say Will & Grace bought American TV out of the closet.

Book review: Leah on the Offbeat

Leah on the Offbeat (Creekwood #2) by Becky Albertalli

We all know Simon’s story by now we even know Victor’s story……..This is Leah’s story.

First a quick Synopsis taken from Wikipedia:
Leah Burke is a drummer, usually on the beat drumming in the band Emoji. However, Leah has kept something from all of her friends, even from her openly gay best friend, Simon: she is bisexual. The only person to know about her sexuality is her mother, whom Leah is very close to. When her friend group starts to rock, Leah doesn’t know what to do, with prom and graduation coming up. In between her friends fighting and graduation, Leah then realises she might like one of her friends more than she first thought.

We first meet Leah in Simon vs….were she is very selfish and is mad at Simon for no reason at all and shuns him for a good chunk of the novel. So i wasn’t sure what to expect going into this novel.

The novel is set a year after Simon vs…… the characters are now seniors year. Much of it focuses on Leah’s bisexuality which is the point of the novel but is not hinted at in the first novel, and her relationship with another well known female character where her bisexuality was also not hinted at. Its very out of nowhere these two become a thing. It would be like at the end of the Harry Potter books Heromine gets with Ginny instead of Ron it just doesn’t make sense. Am not saying this story shouldn’t be told but for the narrative of the story would of been better to introduce a new character with Simon and Co as supporting characters rather then re-write history which was established in the first novel. But still young adult novels where the main character is bisexual is rare so shall give the author a pass as she means well.

This book is funny and well written. Its a very easy read but that is to be expected as Simon was a well written book too! Also just like in Simon Vs, the characters are very diverse but again expected as there are the same characters. Am not going to say too much about the actual book as also like Simon part of the joy is finding out who the secert crush is but I am going to talk about the ending. I loved it they all went off to college and guess what? The characters put themselves first in choosing their colleges, not their relationships at last something aimed at teens that shows your College decision is your own and you don’t have to follow a boy/girl. Its your choice, your future! saying that Leah does end up going to the same college as her love interest but Simon and Bram don’t and seeing that decision play out again is one of the highlights. Which kinda brings us to the major flaw of Leah on the Offbeat. Leah herself is not that likable or interesting at points its like she is playing a supportive role to her own show.

But anyone who has read Simon vs should give this a read as its a great catch-up if you want to know what Simon and Bram are like one year on. Anyone though who is looking for a strong bisexual character I hope you guys have better representation out there.

Movie Review: Brokeback Mountain

Sex Scenes: Revisiting the Sex, Violence, Tenderness and Beans of ...

I Wish I knew how to quit you…….This is more then just a gay cowboy movie.

In the film Ennis tells Jack “There were two old guys shacked up together. They were the joke of the town, even though they were pretty tough old birds.” One day they were found beaten to death. Ennis says: “My dad, he made sure me and my brother saw it. For all I know, he did it.” This sets the tone for the movie and the kinda world these cowboys are living in.

Half an hour of mountains, sheep, changing seasons and minimal dialogue at the beginning of the movie may be a bit much for some people when you have astonishing actors like Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal you know you are in for a outstanding, emotional story and that is what you get.

Its interesting that they never talked about sex, It happens with bare minimal communication they don’t speak before, theres a couple of noises during then Ennis says, ‘I’m not no queer,’ and Jack replies in with ‘Me neither

The film then spans over a 20-year period, where we see deceived wives, bewildered parents and confused kids as Ennis and Jack relationship develops.

Over the years they meet up on ‘fishing trips’. On one of these trips they argue in which Jack reveals his dream to settle down with Ennis, buy some land together and live out the rest of their lives in a peace. The depth of Ennis’s self-loathing is fully revealed when he rejects the suggestion, leaving Jack crushed and defeated.

This is where the movie proves its isnt a gay cowboy love story but a story of two people who have fallen in love but can never be together because of the time they are in. Maybe if these two characters lived in 2020 their story would be completely different.

The single most heartbreaking scene for everyone who watches it, is when Ennis visits Jack’s childhood home after learning of his death. Inside Jack’s wardrobe he finds a pair of their old shirts, speckled with blood and mud, hanging neatly inside each other. The film ends how it began with no dialogue necessary as Heath delivers a performance of a lifetime and we are left with a grieving, broken man who has lost his love.

What did Ennis mean when he said, 'Jack, I swear,' at the end of ...

Bonus….TV couples who have paved the way and deserve a mention for just being them.

Willow and Tara,

Willow and Tara were the first recurring lesbian couple on a prime time network series television in the United States. While they were not TV’s first lesbian couple they were shown as consistently affectionate – thats right they actually touched each other. I am still not over the fact that they killed Tara off.

Justin and Brian,

Justin was 17 years old when Queer as Folk debuted. Over the five seasons, he started a Gay-Straight Alliance at his high school, was brutally gay-bashed at his prom, had to learn how to use his right hand again during his first year of art school, created a successful underground gay comic, fought the election of a homophobic mayor, opposed an anti-gay statewide ballot proposition, and achieved acclaim as an artist. He was the first out and proud gay teen on American series television.

Then there was Brian. He was a decent bowler, but not as good as Ben Bruckner. He is extremely promiscuous and narcissistic and very vain . Brian completely rejects ‘heteronormativity’, in which he includes gay marriage and monogamy in general.

Yet somehow these two manage to have a sexual turn romantic relationship over the course of the show.

David and Keith,

David and Keith helped break down stereotypes about homosexuality and race, offering a realistic portrayal of two men in love and became one of the first gay families represented on TV.

Jack and Doug,

Jack and Ethan may have had the first kiss but they weren’t meant to be.

Jack and Doug have known each other for years . However, we never see them interacting with each other because of this we don’t know much about how their relationship started. Doug, is not ready to publicly declare his homosexuality, doesn’t really like being seen around with another guy, also because of the fear of not being respected as a policeman, if people in the force knew he was gay. After Doug says something unkind to Jack, he gets mad at him and decides to take a break. But do not fear Doug apologies to him, the two get back together they decide to raise Amy, the five-year-old daughter of Jack’s best friend, Jen (who dies at the end of the series) together.

Pin on Favorite Couples(Real/Fictional/Fictional Turned Real)

American network television had gay and lesbian characters in both daytime and prime time but many of those characters only made guest appearances, in or received little storyline after their ‘coming out struggle’ . Kevin was different in the fact that he was already out to his family and in the workplace.

Kisses between men had been especially rare on network television with only Will & Grace featuring gay kisses and relationships regularly In the first season of Brothers & Sisters, Kevin had a number of kisses with his love interests, even kissing Scotty twice in the same episode and shared several bedroom scenes together,

Kevin and Scotty’s commitment ceremony was the first one ever between series regulars. Like all marriages on TV they had their ups and downs, but they made it through all 5 season ending the series still married with children.

Zero Kisses Jude On The Court - Hit the Floor (Video Clip) | VH1

Can I start off by saying Hit the Floor is one of the most outrageous shows I have seen, and i mean that in a good way. Zero and Jude are the most functional couple on the show. They have each other’s backs, they plot together, they have great chemistry! and always protect each other. The thing about Zero is he is a well know basketball star and once Zero kissed Jude on the court after winning a big game that’s when you really started to get deeper into their relationship, feelings and their past lives and families. And they’re there for each other throughout that and its beautiful to see.

TV review: It all started with Ellen

Ellen was a comedy series that ran from 1994-1998.

In 1997, Ellen made television history when the title character came out as a lesbian in the famous “Puppy Episode”. Ellen herself was not yet out in real life but came out on the Oprah show to coincide with the episode. This allowed later episodes of the series to focus on homosexuality and same-sex relationships.

The drama around the episode itself adds to what a big moment this was for television. Ellen was broadcast on ABC which is part of the Disney family and when those big Disney bosses read the script they didnt like it and suggested that they have Ellen get a puppy instead. In fact it took them nearly a year to be persuaded to do this episode.

While this paved the way for many more shows, Ellen lasted for only one more season with season 5 having parental advisory warning and The character was not allowed to have a relationship on screen.

it probably didn’t have the impact what Ellen wanted however It did get conversations started and became the first step to many more TV shows. Without Ellen we may not have had Will and Grace or Ugly Betty.

these were not her lovers (she wasn’t allowed any).

Book Review: The Red Scrolls of Magic

The Red Scrolls of Magic by Cassandra Clare, Wesley Chu | Waterstones

The Red Scrolls of Magic is the first of a trilogy about Magnus and Alec, the characters who first appeared in the Shadowhunter collection by Cassandra Clare.

The Shadowhunter world is an amazing world where over the six books you really get to know the characters and feel part of this world. In this sense its like The Harry Potter books and like the Harry Potter books I could spend ages and ages talking about these books but for today am just going to talk about the characters Magnus and Alec.

Magnus and Alec is that good old traditional love story of Warlock meets Shadowhunter (a secretive race of humans born with angel blood. They fight demons and have lived alongside Downworlders (vampires, warlocks etc) in the Shadow World for well over a thousand years, creating their own culture and civilization within human society. Their mandate is to keep the peace in the Shadow World and keep it hidden from the mundane (ordinary people) world while protecting the inhabitants of both worlds. I am going to skip pass their ‘love story’ as will be here all day as so much happens in the books.

The Red Scrolls of Magic takes place between the 3rd and 4th book of the original Shadowhunter novels. Magnus and Alec decide to go on vacation.

The Red Scrolls of Magic is the story that Magnus and Alec always deserved. They are both trying to live in a world that wants them to be something they’re not, but together they kick ass and are so in love with each other its like real couple goals.

The great thing about Magnus is, he is immortal so someone who is at least 400 years old is going to have alot of stories to tell (you can find more Magnus stories in another spin off book called the Bane Chronicles). This book looks more into Magnus past which as expected is very heartbreaking.

I could write about what happens in the book but i would rcommend you get to know this world in your own time. But i will try and summon up this book and what Magnus and Alec’s relationship show. This book was all about forgiveness and how sometimes forgiving someone is the most amazing thing you can do. We all make mistakes and people can do horrible things, but at the end of the day, everyone wants to be loved, and everyone is deserving of love, and sometimes that comes in the form of forgiveness and sometimes we need to forgive ourselves for past mistakes that we’ve made. Who you are in this moment means way more than who you were growing up, or even who you were last year. Sometimes people really do deserve second chances.

And am so glad they made it through this even though you know it will turn out alright in the end cause you have read the original Shadowhunter books.

There is also an audiobook spin-off series (told you this was a big world to try and explain). Born to Endless Night is the ninth short story in Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy its a light-hearted story in which Alec and Magnus become parents.

Shadowhunters ... Matthew Daddario and Harry Shum Jr as Alec ...
